old bantay bridge

old bantay bridge, philippines

it is hard to miss bantay while driving through the scenic coastal highway of the ilocos region. it is a small town that boasts few of ilocandia’s points of interests.

traversing the abra river that flows between two mountain ranges is an old charming arch bridge popularly known as bantay bridge that has become an iconic symbol of the north. when we stopped to take pictures during our recent trip, i felt nostalgia brought about by this old bridge.

my family used to drive to ilocos to visit my paternal grandparents during summer when i was young. back then it seemed like a long drive from pangasinan to ilocos especially for a young age, but i made sure to stay awake so as not to miss this beautiful bridge.

Nobody calls this Bantay Bridge nor Banaoang (last barrio in Santa) Bridge – to be politically correct, it is known as Quirino Bridge as it was built during the presidency of Elpidio Quirino. It is too bad that they didn’t replace the fallen arches of the old one – I prefer the architecture of the old one.
